Elite Reviewer Spotlight: Jari Dahmen

elite reviewer

JBJS is pleased once again to highlight our Elite Reviewers. The Elite Reviewers Program recognizes our best reviewers for their outstanding efforts. All JBJS reviewers help us maintain the highest standards for quality orthopaedic publishing.

Name:

Jari Dahmen

Affiliation:

Amsterdam University Medical Centers, Amsterdam, the Netherlands

Years in practice:

I have been doing my PhD research for about 3 to 4 years now, currently working as a clinician-researcher.

How did you begin reviewing for other journals and for JBJS in particular?

I started reviewing under the supervision of my PhD supervisor and mentor, Professor Kerkhoffs, after which I progressed to reviewing for the European journal KSSTA. Having gained more experience and enjoyed the work, JBJS requested I perform a peer-review for an article on cartilage damage of the ankle.

What is your top piece of advice for those reviewers who aspire to reach Elite status?

My advice would be not to aim for Elite Reviewer status, but just to start with one peer review a month or every other week so that you have enough time to go through the article in detail. Your goal should be to help the authors reach a higher level of quality for the manuscript, providing feedback in a supportive manner—after all, we are helping each other improve both science and clinical healthcare. Use a pre-defined format that you can use again and again for different articles when performing multiple peer reviews over time. However, the most important piece of advice is to enjoy the peer-reviewing process!

Aside from orthopaedic manuscripts, what have you been reading lately?

A book about a Dutch runner who won an Olympic silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics in the Marathon event. The book is called Athlete Without Borders, and I would highly recommend it to everyone because of the intriguing life of Abdi Nageeye.
