“AI is no longer a distant concept—it’s here, and understanding its opportunities and challenges is essential,” write Guest Editors Jason Strelzow, MD, FRCSC, Stefano Alec Bini, MD, and Michelle Ghert, MD in an editorial introducing the issue: The Future of AI in Orthopaedics: Boon or Bust?

Articles in the issue explore current and emerging applications of AI across the orthopaedic spectrum—in areas such as image analysis, surgical planning, and decision support. The implications of AI in research and academic writing, global perspectives on the future of AI, and other topics are examined.

“The articles in this issue were curated with the hope of challenging assumptions, sparking discussion, and demonstrating how AI tools can enhance clinical practice, improve patient outcomes, and support value-based care delivery,” write the Guest Editors. They share highlights of the new Journal issue and AI tools under exploration, adding that “As AI tools become increasingly embedded in orthopaedic practice, we encourage surgeons to actively engage with these tools—through research, education, and collaboration with data scientists—to ensure that innovation aligns with patient care and professional standards. The future of orthopaedics will be shaped not only by AI technology but also by whether we integrate such technology responsibly and effectively.”
