How did you begin reviewing for other journals and for JBJS in particular?

I began reviewing for other journals in my residency. At that time, I enjoyed contributing to the evaluation of the most cutting edge studies in our field, and it also improved my own thought process about conducting research. I began to review for JBJS after getting involved with the American Orthopaedic Association, which has been a great experience for me.

What is your top piece of advice for reviewers who aspire to reach Elite status?

My most important recommendation would be to be systematic with your reviews—having a good, reproducible way that you evaluate each paper will make your reviews consistent and provide valuable feedback to editors. You want to include both the big picture, such as how the study fits in with prior literature, and the details of the study, such as study methodology and manuscript structure. The more you read and review, the better you will become!

How do you maintain a healthy work/life balance?

Being an orthopaedic surgeon is a very busy career that can be limitless as far as time demands if you allow it, so I think it is critical to protect some time for yourself and your family each week.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?

The highlight of my career so far has been the privilege of working with outstanding surgical mentors and colleagues, and seeing their accomplishments and dedication to advancing the field of orthopaedics.

Aside from orthopaedic manuscripts, what have you been reading lately?

I was an economics major in college, and I have been reading more nonfiction these days—most recently I read Flash Boys by Michael Lewis. He has an innate ability to take complex topics like high frequency trading and make them interesting and understandable to the general public. It also makes you understand how little most of us know about how markets function.
