To commemorate the 90th anniversary of its founding, the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS) collaborated with JBJS to publish a special supplement detailing the history and evolution of orthopaedic surgery certification. This new collection of articles, now available at JBJS.org, provides an overview of the ABOS mission and its ongoing efforts to ensure the safe, ethical, and effective practice of orthopaedic surgery.

“While most orthopaedic surgeons know of the ABOS, many are not familiar with the history of orthopaedic board certification or the reasons for its evolution to its current state,” write Drs. Frederick M. Azar, Michelle A. James, David F. Martin, and Michael S. Bednar in their introduction to the supplement. They note that many basic programs and processes, such as the written examination, the oral examination, and the Credentials Committee, “in principle, are similar to the programs and processes that were developed in the twentieth century,” while new methods to assess professionalism have been developed.
