A total of 42 US-based journal clubs received JBJS funding support in October 2024 to enhance journal club resources and activities. Among the recipients were Dr. Garrett Berger, PGY5, and his mentor Dr. Michael Kelly as part of the University of California San Diego (UCSD) Journal Club.
When asked what the goals of their journal club were, Dr. Berger said, “to improve resident critical knowledge of articles and ability to appraise their strengths and weaknesses. We aimed to do this while improving general knowledge of the orthopaedic literature. We have been able to do this week-in and week-out in journal club. We feel that our guest lecturer [Dr. Joaquin Sanchez-Sotelo, pictured above with Dr. Berger] enabled us to look at these articles through a different lens as someone who is a reviewer for JBJS and JSES [Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery].”

Stay tuned for more information on the JBJS Robert Bucholz Resident Journal Club Support Program for the 2025-2026 academic year. Funding can be used in a variety of ways to support journal club activities. Applications will be open in August.
