Author Insights: In Vivo Loading of the Hip and Knee During Swimming

Swimming is often recommended after total hip or knee arthroplasty. Previous research has shown that aquatic exercises reduce joint loads and enhance muscle strength in TKA and THA patients.

A study in JBJS offers new data on in vivo joint loading during swimming. Three of the researchers share their reflections on the study in a JBJS Author Insights video.

Regarding their investigation, co-author Philipp Damm, PhD, says, “We could show that swimming, indeed, is a safe and low-impact activity compared with other activities we also investigated.”
