Applications are now being accepted for the new JBJS MRC Oxford Diploma in Shoulder & Elbow Surgery, which begins Tuesday, November 17, 2026. Led by Professor Tom Cosker, the online course comprises 25 weekly one-hour sessions across 5 modules covering rotator cuff pathology, instability, arthroplasty, shoulder trauma, and elbow disorders. The course is suitable for newly appointed consultants, fellows, senior residents and trainees at ST4 level and above, and early-career surgeons.

The Shoulder & Elbow Diploma is a new offering that builds on the wider JBJS MRC Oxford diploma program. Participants from previous JBJS MRC Oxford courses in hip, knee, spine, oncology, and foot and ankle surgery have noted that the structured curriculum, flexibility of online learning, faculty expertise, and clinically focused case discussions are key features of the format.
Course Structure and Format
The new course will follow a similar approach, with faculty-led lectures, clinical cases, discussion, and live Q&A. Recordings will be available on demand, giving delegates a way to revisit difficult topics or catch up when clinical schedules conflict with a live session.
Weekly sets of five formative multiple choice questions—125 in total—can help delegates consolidate the material and consider how it applies to real clinical decisions. The case-based format is also intended to support preparation for FRCS (Tr & Orth), EBOT, and board examinations.
What makes an online diploma useful in day-to-day practice?
As shared by a delegate regarding the previous Hip Diploma course, “The structured curriculum, high-quality material, and flexibility of online learning allowed me to integrate this knowledge directly into my daily practice. These courses have significantly enhanced my clinical decision-making, refined my surgical planning, and improved my understanding of contemporary techniques, ultimately helping me provide better care to my patients.”
That experience comes from JBJS MRC Oxford broader diploma portfolio, but it helps explain the thinking behind the new Shoulder & Elbow course: a paced curriculum that can sit alongside clinical work.
