The American Orthopaedic Association (AOA) and its Council of Orthopaedic Residency Directors (CORD) recently issued a Statement of Support for Inclusivity in response to highly alarming comments in a crowd-sourced file circulated among medical students during the residency application season. The comments included “direct attack on individual applicants and misogynistic, racist, and other disparaging commentary.”
JBJS stands with the AOA/CORD in condemning this behavior.
The leadership principles of inclusivity and respect are essential to uphold and practice at all levels of orthopaedics. Discriminatory or divisive comments regarding any applicant, or applicants, must not be tolerated. We join the AOA’s call to work toward a future “where orthopaedics is inclusive, diverse, and equitable.”
