OrthoBuzz is pleased to highlight the winners of the JBJS Essential Surgical Techniques (EST) Editor’s Choice Awards for 2022. Two awards are given, for the best Key Procedures article and the best Subspecialty Procedures article submitted to the video journal each calendar year. The Key Procedures series focuses on basic techniques that most general orthopaedic surgeons perform, while the Subspecialty Procedures series is geared toward advanced procedures performed most often by subspecialists.
Congratulations to the 2022 EST Award winners:
Best EST Key Procedures Article
“Proximal Medial Gastrocnemius Release: Surgical Technique” by Carlo Gamba, MD, PhD, FEBOT, Carlos Álvarez Gomez, MD, Judit Martínez Zaragoza, MD, Coelho Leal Alexandre, MD, Daniel Bianco Adames, MD, and Albert Ginés-Cespedosa, MD, PhD, FEBOT
In this article, the authors “aptly demonstrate a release of the medial gastrocnemius to reduce tension in the Achilles-calcaneus-plantar system associated with conditions such as recalcitrant plantar fasciitis,” notes EST Editor Dr. Edward Cheng in a recent editorial announcing the 2022 winners. “Although some may consider this to be a minor procedure from a technical standpoint, the authors emphasize that a strong understanding of the local anatomy allows surgeons to perform the procedure with minimal dissection while avoiding complications.”
Best EST Subspecialty Procedures Article
“Subacromial Balloon Spacer: Indications, Rationale, and Technique” by Suhas P. Dasari, MD, Zeeshan A. Khan, BA, Hasani W. Swindell, MD, Nabil Mehta, MD, Benjamin Kerzner, BS, and Nikhil N. Verma, MD
Says EST Editor Dr. Edward Cheng, the authors describe “the appropriate use of a novel, saline-solution-filled balloon implant for the treatment of one of the most challenging rotator cuff pathologies: the massive, irreparable tear. . . Simultaneous split-screen video of both the surgeon’s view and the arthroscope view help viewers to understand the nuances of the procedure.”
