OrthoBuzz is pleased to announce the winners of the JBJS Essential Surgical Techniques (EST) Editor’s Choice Awards. Two EST awards are given: for the best Key Procedures article and the best Subspecialty Procedures article submitted to the video-based journal each calendar year.
The Key Procedures series focuses on basic techniques that most general orthopaedic surgeons perform. The Subspecialty Procedures series is geared toward advanced procedures performed most often by subspecialists.
Congratulations to the 2021 EST Award winners:
Best EST Key Procedures Article
“Comprehensive Modified Latarjet Technique: What the Masters Taught Us” by Eddie Y. Lo, MD; Paolo Montemaggi, MD; Temilola Majekodunmi, MD; Julia Lund, MA; and Sumant G. Krishnan, MD
This video-based article pays homage to the masters of shoulder surgery, summarizing and demonstrating the modified Latarjet technique for glenohumeral dislocations and instability.
Co-author Eddie Y. Lo, MD tells OrthoBuzz:
“The Latarjet procedure is one of the most popular shoulder surgical techniques in the world. The toughest part about it is that it has so many intrinsic details, all of which are pertinent. The most interesting part is that many famous surgeons contributed to the procedure to make it better. Knowing this history and its associated intrinsic details will help us perform this surgery well for optimal outcome and minimal complications.”
Best EST Subspecialty Procedures Article
“Rotating Hinge Revision Total Knee Arthroplasty for Severe Arthrofibrosis” by Eytan M. Debbi, MD, PhD; Kyle Alpaugh, MD; Daniel A. Driscoll, MD; T. David Tarity, MD; Ioannis Gkiatas, MD, PhD; and Peter K. Sculco, MD
The authors address the difficult problem of chronic knee arthrofibrosis following total knee arthroplasty. A rotating hinge revision arthroplasty to address knee stiffness is discussed and demonstrated.
Says Dr. Eytan M. Debbi, co-author:
“Severe arthrofibrosis after total knee arthroplasty is a very challenging clinical condition. In this video article, we demonstrate the use of a rotating hinge revision implant for severe cases of arthrofibrosis after total knee arthroplasty. We believe this is a powerful surgical technique for the treatment of arthrofibrosis and hope this video article serves as a helpful guide for surgeons treating patients with this difficult clinical condition.”
