JBJS is pleased once again to highlight our Elite Reviewers. The Elite Reviewers Program recognizes our best reviewers for their outstanding efforts. All JBJS reviewers help us maintain the highest standards for quality orthopaedic publishing. Today we introduce Elite Reviewer Michael Stone.
Name:
Michael Stone, MD
Affiliation:
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles, California
Years in practice:

How did you begin reviewing for other journals and for JBJS in particular?
I was invited to review for the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery as a fellow. I enjoyed reviewing for JSES and was recommended by my fellowship director to review for JBJS. He connected me to Dr. Green and I have been reviewing for the journal since.
What is your top piece of advice for reviewers who aspire to reach Elite status?
Try to accept every assignment and provide honest and constructive feedback that includes the quality of the research and readership (i.e., ease of readability). I think having a review template is helpful in organizing my thoughts and providing standardized feedback both with identifying strengths and areas of improvement. I also read the article first, and then again in detail and take notes.
How do you maintain a healthy work/life balance?
Pursuing academic pursuits and attending specialty meetings keeps me engaged with current research and keeps me in touch with my colleagues.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Recognition from my peers and mentors as a specialist in shoulder surgery.
Aside from orthopaedic manuscripts, what have you been reading lately?
George Orwell’s 1984.
