JBJS is pleased once again to highlight our Elite Reviewers. The Elite Reviewers Program recognizes our best reviewers for their outstanding efforts. All JBJS reviewers help us maintain the highest standards for quality orthopaedic publishing. Today we introduce Elite Reviewer Don Roberts.
Name:
Don Roberts, MD
Affiliation:
Northwest Surgical Research Foundation, Vancouver, WA
Years in practice:
37
How did you begin reviewing for other journals and for JBJS in particular?
After I was in practice for a few years, I made an off-hand criticism of an article to Dr. Harry Cowell, then Editor of JBJS. He suggested that reviewing was difficult and if I wanted to give it a try I should send him my CV.
What is your top piece of advice for reviewers who aspire to reach Elite status?
Read the submission early. Sleep on it for a day or two. Then re-read the submission and write your review. Ask yourself, Is this information going to be valuable to our readership?
How do you maintain a healthy work/life balance?
In retrospect, life goes by much faster than we expect. As much as possible, leave your work at the office or hospital.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Being team physician for USA men’s and women’s basketball in the London Olympics, and looking forward to my daughter joining our practice this fall.
Aside from orthopaedic manuscripts, what have you been reading lately?
Chapman’s Piloting and Seamanship.
