Each year, the JBJS Robert Bucholz Resident Journal Club Support Program helps orthopaedic residency programs strengthen journal club activities, support discussion of the latest evidence, and bring residents and faculty together for meaningful academic exchange. During the 2025-2026 academic year, 55 winning journal clubs used JBJS support to enhance their journal club experiences in creative and engaging ways.
Among this year’s recipients, the UMass Orthopedic Surgery journal club gathered around the fire for a spine-focused session on adult spinal deformity and level selection. The group noted its appreciation for the JBJS grant and for the opportunity to participate in enriching discussions with peers and mentors. The journal club added that the program helped create “a comfortable environment for academic discussion and enhanced mentorship” while supporting its goal of reviewing landmark and current articles to develop evidence-based practice, foster clinical knowledge, and improve performance on the in-training exam.
The Hospital for Special Surgery Chapter of the JBJS Journal Club also shared highlights from its third session of the year, “History and Evolution of Cementless Femoral Stem Designs,” moderated by faculty member Dr. Mathias Bostrom. The session included a hands-on learning component featuring various stem designs, including triple-tapered, fit-and-fill, and modular diaphyseal-fitting stems, with participation from HSS residents PGY1 through PGY4. Survey feedback from HSS described the broader series, Arthroplasty Archives: What Was, What Is, and What’s Next?, as a resident-led, faculty-moderated arthroplasty education forum that uses historical context to better understand current controversies and future questions in hip and knee arthroplasty.
Together, these examples reflect the range of ways awardees used the support: to bring residents and faculty together, create hands-on learning opportunities, invite expert voices into the conversation, and make journal club a more consistent part of residency education.
Survey responses highlighted journal clubs that met monthly, hosted guest speakers, reviewed landmark and current literature, and used funding for food, venue support, educational materials, honoraria, and hands-on sessions.
Awardees described the program’s impact in their own words:
- Henry Ford Health Journal Club: “We have limited funding for our journal clubs as we avoid utilizing industry for funding so the funding from this grant was immeasurable for continuing these!”
- University of Washington Journal Club: “It gave us the push to get together as a residency to engage across generations of surgeons in a lighthearted, food-filled environment!”
- Boston University Medical Center Journal Club: “We were able to add a unique, and vital component of being an orthopedic surgeon that is often missing from resident education as a result of earning the JBJS funding.”
- University of Iowa Journal Club: “We were able to host more people and have better discussions than ever before!”
- Hospital for Special Surgery Journal Club: “The JBJS Journal Club Support Program turned a long-held idea into a thriving resident-led arthroplasty forum…”
- Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Journal Club: “The JBJS Journal Club Support Program allowed our journal club to hold more sessions throughout the year, hear from more specialized presenters, and do it all under a relaxed and engaging environment that is perfect for stimulating learning.”
