Teun Teunis, MD, PhD

University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Years in practice: 2

How did you begin reviewing for other journals and for JBJS in particular?

Through my mentor (David Ring) during my PhD research fellowship.

What is your top piece of advice for reviewers who aspire to reach Elite status?

Decide why you want to review. If you do it for the “Elite status,” it might be hard to obtain. For me, some people like cross-word puzzles, I really like the mental exercise of reviewing a study.

What is your favorite tip or tool for maintaining a healthy work/life balance?

I put family first, the rest second. So decide on your priorities. And I mix in some stoicism for when stuff gets tough.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?

An ectopic forearm replant.

Aside from orthopaedic manuscripts, what have you been reading lately?

The Kingkiller Chronicle, most captivating books I’ve read in 10 years. And more science-y: The Book of Why.
